First Stop? The Burgundy region of France.
The "Flavors of Burgundy" AMA Waterways river cruise will begin in Dijon and travel down the Saône to the food capital of France, Lyon. As we meander down the river on the beautiful AmaCello, we will stop in charming cities to sample the magnificent wines of the Burgundy region. Take a sneak peek of what is in store!
Château Clos de Vougeot
A wall-enclosed clos (vineyard) in the Burgundy wine region, the chateaux was named for the river Vouge which is the stream separating the village Vougeot from Chambolle-Musigny. Clos de Vougeot is the largest single vineyard in the Côte de Nuits granting its grand cru designation.
Typically, Clos de Vougeot wine packs very intense colors, ranging from strawberry red to deep garnet. The Grand Crus from this red wine appellation exude an aroma of blackberries, raspberries, and cherries mixed with mint and truffle and are characterized by a long finish.
Château de Couches
The main building of the Château de Couches was built between 1844 and 1848. In neo-Gothic style, it is located in the corner of two curtain walls from the 13th century, then surrounded by a round tower from the same period. The roof of the main building, recently restored in accordance with the very first existing photographs of the place, is made of flat glazed tiles. Without pattern, these tiles of yellow, green, red-orange and dark brown mimic the plunging vines of the clos bordering the old Roman road linking Autun to Chalon-sur -Saone.
Arguably the oldest vineyards in Burgundy, the Côtes du Couchois and its versicolor clay soil from the Triassic reveal wines which are striking in their color being bright cherry red and sometimes ruby. On the nose you will get a multitude of different fruity flavors, from blackcurrant, fig, and blueberry, to pepper, spice and leathery notes. You’ll notice the well-structured tannins in the mouth, though the finish is light, slightly saline and fresh.
The Mâconnais
The Mâconnais wine region is characterized by rolling limestone hills and a Mediterranean-influenced climate. The region is warmer with lower rainfall and the soil here is limestone-based clay that has a high content of alkaline, iron, and minerals. Chardonnay responds well to this soil bringing out great flavor and freshness. Grapes here grow riper and richer in flavor which is well reflected in their powerful white wines.
The most planted grape variety in the Maconnais wine region is Chardonnay, which accounts for more than 80% of total production. The region also grows Gamay and Pinot Noir, which are used to make red and rose wines.
